I've scoured the internet for an Excel BOM template and it seems every promising link leads me to a sales-pitch for a BOM / production-line material management software which is far too complex and costly for what I'm attempting to accomplish. I have created Excel BOMs before; however, they were limited to a single product configuration and were comprised entirely of manual entries without use of lookup functions. Now, I'm wanting to evaluate several configuations (products) derived from a fixed set of options (parts/sub-assemblies). I stumbled across this post and I believe I'm looking for the same thing as neorez, but after 4 years, the links above are 'dead' and I'm uncertain if these users are still active forum participants. But, I thought I'd try.
The evaluations will be focused on cost and will help guide the development of the lowest-cost configuration - 'Design to BOM'. The BOM structure I'm using could have as many as 8 levels of assembly. Does anyone have a template which could help? Or can someone help me outline the structure of the BOM with lookup functionality (e.g. Product BOM collects information from part/assembly tables).

Or, is Excel even the right choice for what I'm attempting. I've read on several sites that Access might be a better choice. I greatly appreciate any direction, insight and assistance anyone can provide. Thanks - Jason.
